Student brief for promoting the Art & Design Archives

Earlier this year, we talked to Visual Communication lecturer Colette Jeffrey about how some of her final year BA students might use the Art & Design Archives. As part of their assessed work, they were set a project brief to design a set of five posters to promote the use of our collections by students both for research and as a source of creative inspiration.

As part of the project, the students developed their camera skills  by photographing a selection of works from the School of Art and Marion Richardson collections.   They then had to apply what they'd learnt about typography, choice of imagery and use of colour to the design of their posters. In a follow-up session, we looked at the ideas four of the students had come up with and provided feedback on each of them. Colette told us that our input had been 'very useful', and Aaron Vine - whose set of posters we finally chose - said that the opportunity to work on a real brief and to discuss his designs was an extremely valuable one.

Aaron has also designed a logo for us, and is currently working on a set of bookmarks, a collections guide and a flyer - all with the aim of promoting the Art & Design Archives. We have found his approach very professional, and wish him every success in his future career.
