Be on the look out for some interesting creative events using archives and collections at the new Library of Birmingham.
Birmingham City Council is working with a number of partners including the Rep and Arts Council England to put on a series of events on the theme of Discovery to celebrate the opening of the Library of Birmingham next September. These will run from Tuesday 3 September until 31 December 2013.
Taking its inspiration from the Library’s internationally-important archives and special collections, the Discovery Season will include:
- Playground of Discovery, a specially-commissioned Cabinet of Curiosities housing a rolling programme of creative residencies throughout the season;
- The Library of Lost Books, an exhibition celebrating the history of the book featuring contemporary artists and printmakers inspired by books that have reached the end of their natural lives; Reference Works, an exhibition of work by four photographers that has been created in response to the building of the Library of Birmingham; and
- Volume, the Birmingham Art, Book and Print Fair in December that brings together a number of existing organisations, viz. Writing West Midlands, Birmingham Zine Festival, An Endless Supply, BCU Typography Hub, Grand Union and Eastside Projects.
More details about the Discovery Season will be announced later this year.
