Welcome to our new website, Archives and Creative Practice. We will be exploring the different ways in which artists respond to archival material, something which has been of increasing interest to many contemporary artists in recent years.
Much of the material on the website was originally developed as part of a Student Academic Partnership scheme that ran within the School of Art at Birmingham City University in 2011-2012. This aimed to increase awareness of the existence of the Art and Design Archives among practice-based students, and to encourage them to make creative use of the collections. Grace Williams, one of the students involved who was studying for an MA in Fine Art, set up a website on the Posterous blogging platform as a student resource for her peers. Two members of staff and another MA student also contributed items for the website.
Twitter acquired Posterous last year, and has since taken the decision that they will no longer support the blogging platform. We have therefore transferred the content on to our new website, which we will be updating frequently with news of developments in artists’ engagement with archival material, including the creative contributions of our own students.
